January 5, 2010

The left-most photo is the resident Fresh Pond Reservation Eastern Screech Owl, red morph (there have been red and gray ones over the last four plus years), about to leave the nest for a night of hunting (early bird special?). The second photo is of the same owl in flight, travelling to the right of the nest and up the hill (if your back is to the fence at Post 500). The ESO, in flight, is near the middle and top third of the picture, and resembles an upside-down U.

January 4, 2010

The Great Blue Heron stands on the ice in the eastern corner of the big pond. There's a mystery duck in the south section of the big pond. Meanwhile crows seem to have found something to eat on the ice.

January 3, 2010, Sunday

Another day with snow on the ground, dense clouds in the sky and a tendency for everything to be black and white.

January 2, 2010, Saturday

The big news today is new snow and sledding--which always brings out a big crowd on a Saturday. There were miscellaneous flakes falling at points around the pond.
